  • I refer to the letter by Ann Joo entitled Keadilan a Trojan horse for PAS.

Anwar Ibrahim may have a cult following among many Malays and Muslims but I would hereby like to give my views on him.

The Anwar I grew up encountering was a religious fanatic education minister and a promoter of a fundamentalist Islamisation of the Barisan Nasional government, with his boss of that time fully aware of what he was doing.

Anwar was, to be fair, not the only religious fanatic inside Umno during the 1980s. Sanusi Junid was another pain in the back then. But Anwar was the rising star of Umno Team A's religious cell.

It was under Anwar's watch that so many Malay women in the government were 'persuaded' to wear the tudung. The history of the Malay people prior to the coming of Islam was not to be recalled anymore.

Anwar even insulted the Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman during the election campaign of 1990, and he called the Tunku a dog of the British. Anwar, with the approval of his boss, stopped Jewish musicians from coming into Malaysia.

And he empowered the religious departments and the Syariah courts of the states to act without reference to the state governments led by Umno. These religious apparatus became a fascist body within the moderate Barisan Nasional government, trampling upon the rights of progressive Muslims.

Did I cheer when the Mahathir finally got rid of Anwar? Yes and no. I fully lauded Mahathir's move to remove Anwar from the government and Umno. But the Tun went too far in jailing Anwar without a fair trial and for allowing Rahim Noor to severely assault him.

One should never torture his opponent. Mistreating an opponent will only enrage the opponent, and the opponent will proceed to call on his followers to create chaos in the country. This is what happened when the Tun mistreated Anwar.

Anwar should now serve his 15 years in jail as he has already been sentenced. But he should be compensated in kind by the present prime minister for unlawful detention and also for the torture at the hands of Rahim Noor.

If this is justice for Anwar, I think it is enough for the man. After all, Anwar has committed injustices against us, alongside his former boss and many other Team A Umnoputras.
