Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Dato' Prof Dr HashimYaacob letter Talk to me about UM is referred to.

I have interviewed many UM students and have employed some of them. Most though, were turned down even during the first interview for not possessing the basic stuff we look for - self- confidence, communication skills, vision and goals, critical thinking, good English and technical skills in their own fields.

Can you imagine multimedia students from UM saying that they have not really learnt Macromedia Flash?

Those that we took in, and were satisfied with, were normally regarded by their course-mates as self-motivated, self-learnt, outgoing and 'different from the typical UM type'.

A world-class university should be one that produces outstanding graduates among many, if not all, of its students, and not just a few who are 'different from the typical'.

It's not the fault of the students. Most of them were smart and confident when they entered the university. Unfortunately, the latter drained away their talents and confidence.

Many other employers have shared their similar experiences with me. It is a national concern.

Instead of inviting individual writers to his office for discussions on their 'grouses', the VC should conduct a study on this matter and find out its reasons (unless he is already well aware of) if he is really sincere about restoring UM as a world-class university.
