Malaysians will remember the shouts of 'reformasi' that reverberated on Sept 2 to rejoice in the freedom of Anwar Ibrahim whose conviction for sodomy was quashed by the Federal Court. Though it was not an absolute and unanimous judgment, Anwar's release had to be granted.

Pak Lah shall forever deserve great credit and praise.

Thousands of Malaysians who are Anwar's diehard supporters are jubilant over his release and ironically, there were a few foreign governments, too, which expressed their sense of relief at his freedom.

However, let us not forget that for the thousands of Anwar's supporters and political sympathisers, there are millions of other loyal Malaysians who are not committed to Anwar's reformasi movement, and neither are they interested in his political belief and revolutionary strategies.

To my friend Anwar, whom I have known since 1976, it is my personal hope that you shall not betray the nation with the freedom that you have achieved after six years of political confinement, and that you shall also honour your principles to fight for legitimate rights through the ballot boxes in a civilised and democratic manner.

I believe that under the present political circumstances, the Federal Court cannot be held accountable if your subsequent calls for 'reformasi' once again emerged with fiery emotions beyond the control of the authority.

We Malaysians hope and pray that the Barisan Nasional government under the dynamic leadership of Pak Lah will prevail under any political and social circumstances, in order to preserve continued peace, tranquility and national security for the ordinary rakyat.

But my friend Anwar, I must say, as a friend and a political comrade in Umno, (through which you have previously enjoyed in the second highest political and ministerial status in government) I feel extremely hurt that you have allowed your political opportunists to implicate me in your alleged 'political conspiracy'.

This was done by using Jamal Ambro , a Palestinian American refugee, to discredit my reputation as part of your defence in the infamous trial for your sodomy charge. I have remained silent for the last six years out of respect to you and on the advice of the late attorney-general, the present attorney-general. I was not subpoenaed to appear in court as the witness named in the affidavit filed by Jamal Ambro.

Now that the case is over, I wish to express my personal concern as well as for public knowledge that the trials of Anwar Ibrahim over the last six years has created universal legal history as one of the most costly defence proceedings (in the region of hundreds of million ringgit) with worldwide interest.

One man's corruption and sodomy charges with political implications had hundreds of people intimidated. Some of these people were innocent and had been drawn into the controversial court proceedings by certain unscrupulous individuals or groups of opportunists who were out to exploit the political demise of Anwar from the day he was dismissed from his coveted office of deputy prime minister in the cabinet of Dr Mahathir Mohamed.

Some of these defence witnesses in Anwar's trial had no moral or human dignity and were only interested to in getting themselves cheap publicity via the local and international print and electronic media.

I also believe that some of them have enriched themselves with their fabricated stories told and retold at the expense of Anwar and his political misfortune. If my assumption is true, may God Almighty, Allah swt forgive their sins, though they will continue to live with their conscience that will not be redeemed until the Day of Judgement.

Finally, to my friend Anwar, I am glad that you have had the courage to honour your commitment to seek urgent surgical attention in Germany upon your recent release by the courts. By your immediate action, you have cleared some of the misconceptions expressed by your critics and have proven that your health is of utmost important at this point in time.

Alhamdulillah, I understand that your operation has been successful and like all other Malaysians, I wish you a well and a speedy recovery in the weeks ahead.

May Allah swt bless you and your family.
