I refer to the report headlines Law and (fees) order in the New Straits Times .

It is amazing to note that the Malaysian legal profession intends to introduce minimum scale fees (no discounts), which is nothing but price collusion in the form of a cartel. Shouldn't their fees be based on efficiency and how well the firms manage their cost?

If some firms can survive on lower fees, they should be commended while the rest try to compete in a free market. Also, a large segment of the population may not be able to pay these set charges.

I am very concerned about this negative trend and can't wait for other professionals to introduce cartel charges, e.g. by insurance companies (hopefully not professional indemnity for lawyers!) and property developers.

This action will give an unfair advantage to the bigger firms and remove the competitive edge of smaller firms (which have lower cost structure and less resources). Immensely
