It is amazing to read through Rajen Devaraj clever piece Is Anwar serious about reform?

Of course, only Anwar Ibrahim could answer that question in all honesty. However, one thing is clear and that is, like it or not, Rajen and those who are like-minded are expecting a superhuman effort from Anwar.

A lot has been said on Anwar's supposed inability to make changes from within Umno and the government between 1982 and 1998. Seems that many people think that he failed and miserably too at that.

But many people do not realise that it is not easy to reform a whole society unless one has the upper hand all the time. And we are not talking about Umno or the government alone.

How can corruption flourish without a party with something to gain abetting it? Can we blame Anwar if inspite of all his efforts, a person who breaks a traffic law offers a bribe to a policeman?

And on the other hand, how do we know that Anwar did not do anything significant during his days in the government? I am sure he must have done something generally right to earn the position of respect and admiration that he has right now not only locally or regionally but also world wide.

He may have had to use some new strategies to bring about real changes for the benefit of society at large, but so what as long as they were within reasonable tolerances?

Indeed, only time will tell how this whole episode will end. One thing for sure is though - the duty, task and responsibility of making this country of ours great does not rest on Anwar's or Anwaristas' shoulders alone.

They rest on the shoulders of each and every citizen of Malaysia.
