I refer to the report Thais say 84 dead after clashes in Muslim south as well as other media reports on these needless deaths as well the comments of the Thai prime minister regarding the said catastrophic event.

We wish to convey our displeasure and utmost anger at the Thai premier's comments, which blamed the deaths on the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. He was quoted as saying: 'It is normal that their bodies could not handle it ... it is not about someone attacking them.'

This is shows blatant disrespect towards the holy Muslim month of Ramadan besides showing a lack of responsibility and accountability for the Thai security forces' inhumane treatment of these martyrs.

Thaksin Shinawatra must explain why thousands of people were cramped into the trucks so much so their necks were broken. Could they not find alternative transportation methods to ferry those people to lock-ups?

We demand that the Thai premier retract his comments as well as call upon his spokesman Jakrapob Penkair to account for the latter's statement that 'fasting and drug consumption' were the major factors behind the deaths.

It is unfair to Muslims in Thailand in particular and the Muslim fraternity in general for fatal and atrocious acts committed by Thai security forces to be blamed on Ramadan.

We demand that the Thai government be accountable for this massacre and not lay the blame on Islam.
