There have been has been a lot of letters to the editors in the mainstream newspapers which highlight the achievements of our prime minister in his one year in office. However, one cannot deny the fact that the man himself and his predecessor comes from different breeds and value systems and it not fair to compare both of them.

No one can deny that the prime minister's traits as a humble, soft-spoken man with a non-confrontational approach has won over the public at large and had taken the wind out of the oppositions sails during the last general election.

One has to give credit to the prime minister for what he has done to reduce excess spending by cancelling several controversial projects such as the billion-ringgit double-track railway contract and the gambling licence purportedly awarded by previous administration to a local tycoon.

Having said that, if only the government can speed up the graft investigations against both civil servants and businessmen which have resulted in a litany of shoddy government projects including the schools computer labs fiasco , a government hospital infected with fungus , the eyesore Matrade building, the cracked pillars of the MRR2 highway , the landslide prone North-South highway and the accident-prone East Coast highway .

The examples quoted above show that all it not well with the implementation of government policies which should reflect prudent spending to benefit the public and not selected individuals with close connections to their political masters.

On another front, he release of the former deputy prime minister marked another milestone in the first year of our prime minister and brings back hope of independence of the judiciary. One can hope and pray that the Malay community which was split into two will be united again under Pak Lah's watch.

The prime minister said it well when he said his 'honeymoon period' was over and now is the time to work more and talk less. All the best to you Mr Prime Minister, hopefully your road map will lead our country to greater heights with the practice of transparency and good corporate governance.

Under your watch, we hope the tainted ministers and corrupt officials in both the public and private sectors will finally face the music. Credibility is to be restored as trust, honesty and integrity are the core values leaders should have in order to lead our nation to greater heights.
