After reading Josh Hong's Chinese racism - not quite in a nutshell , I am surprised that a Chinese like him could have such slanted views of his race.

Just because he has cited a few examples from history books doesn't mean that he can make sweeping accusations against all Chinese. For instance, the so-called example of the barbarians sinicising themselves was done at their collected volition, just like the Manchus did after the Qing Dynasty came to power. Shouldn't we Chinese be proud of this? It's a different ball game if they were coerced.

China never had any superpower intentions, not then, not now. Being a well-read person, Hong should be aware of the bad blood between the Japanese and the Chinese. It exists because of what the Japanese did to the Chinese during World War II and not owing up to it.

Had the Japanese truly apologised like the Germans did, I'm sure the world would have forgiven and forgotten but not until then. So please don't blame the Chinese for venting their anger over the lost soccer game quoted by Hong in his article.

But the crux of the frustration over that particular football game lies in the fact that the Japanese goal should not have stood (replays clearly show this). Even then, the Chinese press and commentators did not side with the Chinese team and in fact said that Japan were, in fact, the better team.

And speaking of the tsunami disaster, Indonesia has a heinous record against her Chinese citizens. So naturally, after another disaster, the Chinese media has cause for concern. Hong said they were overreacting, but he failed to point out that the Chinese media were quite neutral in their reporting.

They said all shops were not spared of looting, not just the Chinese shops. While we're at it, why didn't Hong point out that the Indonesian media had deliberately tarnished the Chinese food aid by saying they were expired stuff and not fit for consumption?

The truth is the Indonesians got it wrong because the printed date on the foodstuff was actually the production date - not the expiry date. Now, if that was not China bashing, what is?

The Chinese have been persecuted and been victims of racism the world over. We certainly don't need our own kind to accuse us of racism.
