I believe that the debate on the Interfaith Commission transcends the immediate reality of Malaysia. Personally, I am of the view that such a noble enterprise should begin at a dialogue level between the representatives of the various religions.

And yes, I do believe that it should start informally at first. There is no need for it to take a legal form nor approach until such time when confidence and mutual trust are established. Obviously, such confidence and trust between the different faiths in Malaysia is not yet apparent.

However - and this is the point which I want to highlight - since the matter has been blown out of proportion, it is imperative that Malaysians of all faiths get together to make the Interfaith Commission work.

Because failing here will send the wrong signal to Malaysia's neighbours and the international community. How would it look to foreigners if told that Muslim Malaysians have rejected an attempt towards promoting 'multi-religious harmony' and this done in the shadow of the recent infamous Jawi raid ? Folks, it won't look good at all.

For better or for worse - now that the conference has taken place - Muslims must somehow sit down with the other religious bodies to engage in discussions. The Interfaith Commission cannot be left to fail as that would paint a very negative image of Malaysia.

Perhaps everyone has to put their egos aside and national interests first.
