Letter from a seven-year-old to his parents and God

(upon the incident of his unilateral conversion from Hindu to Muslim)

Amma,
I like praying to Krishna. I like his body:
it is electric blue; beautiful, my favourite colour,
So handsome and strong!
You lit the fire at our altar,
We prayed to Him together; you and I.
You named me Keshava after our Superhero.

Appa,
You now tell me that I can no longer pray to Krishna;
That no one can have a body that is electric blue!
That Krishna does not exist; that he is a myth; a lie.
But you forget that Superheroes have different bodies.
Superman, Batman; Ironman; Spiderman - think of them!
What about Incredible Hulk? He is electric green!

Krishna,
I am sorry. I can no longer pray to you.
Appa (on his own!) has changed my religion.
It is something called Article 12(4) of a Big Book.
It is called the ‘federal constitution’.
Something called ‘unilateral conversion’...
Appa says that we are now Muslims. Him and I.

Allah,
My name has been changed.
I am now Mohamad. It is all very confusing.
Please look after Amma. I miss her.
I live with Appa now.
Say hello to Krishna for me.
I know you both are great friends.

From,
Keshava/Mohamad
