From Our Readers

I suggest we talk less of paradise and the afterlife when we can’t even handle our life here on earth.

I also suggest we talk less of great vision for this nation when we are unable to solve our daily problems right here and right now.

Why do I say Malaysia is now a nation of mediocrity?

It is just so hard for us to find a single thing that we have done right. On the contrary we have allowed every issue and problem to fester and to deteriorate.

How on earth this nation is able to withstand so much of nonsense and wastage is simply beyond me.

We are just too unprofessional and corrupt to do anything right. I think most contractors in this country are having it too good simply because our regulators are blind, stupid or corrupt.

In the past we have collapsed roofs, fallen ceilings, leaked water pipes and failed air-conditioning in stadiums, offices and hospitals. Now the problems seem to be getting bigger and more sophisticated.

How did the multimillion immigration systems become so fouled up? Who was responsible for this?

How did FGV, after listing, lose so much value? Did other plantation firms suffer the same consequence as FGV despite whatever factors we may want to link to FGV’s poor showing?

What happened to more than seven hundred thousand ringgit robbery at the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Kuala Lumpur recently? Did the department follow security procedures? Who must be held accountable?

How did a two billion ringgit KLIA2 become a four billion ringgit shopping mall with a runway? Again, who was responsible for the massive cost overrun and poor finishing at every nook and corner?

How did ‘road depressions’ become so rampant nowadays? Almost every new road is saddled with his problem. I am sure many have noticed a giant depression on the way to KLIA2. Again, how come no one was ever held accountable?

How long does the Land Transport Commission (Spad) need to resolve the issues and problems within the taxi industry? How long do the JPJ and police need to come out with a comprehensive strategy on enforcement and road safety?

Johor is now getting potable water from Singapore. Kedah is having a water problem now. Soon Penang and Selangor too may face the same problem if holistic actions are not taken now. I guess we are simply hapless when come to anything that requires long-term planning and thinking.

When we see other countries setting up sovereign wealth funds, we too want to have one. Instead of creating wealth for the country, our sovereign fund has become the mother of all the problems we face today. Have we cost out the amount of resources, time, money, energy and attention our sovereign fund has sapped this nation?

How do we explain the rampant use of fire arms to settle scores in the country? Granted that it is not possible to control all crimes, but has it ever occurred to us that the shootings and the killing are getting a little scary nowadays? What happened to our strict regulations and enforcement on possession and use of firearms?

I think many Malaysians are asking why we are having so many crimes without criminals, so many blunders without anyone having to pay for the mistakes and so many fiascos without anyone being held responsible.
