In the light of the US Justice Department’s (DOJ) revelation and a suit filed to seize related assets, here are some of my random thoughts:
1. I think we are getting no wiser of the malfeasance that has taken place. I think we are not surprised by the fact that a huge amount of public money was indeed stolen. The DOJ only confirmed what we knew all along. Would this revelation make a significant difference to resolve the protracted issues we face today? I doubt it.
2. As predicted, the official response from our government was to extend full cooperation to DOJ. But wait a minute; had we not declared earlier that no chargeable wrong was ever committed? Hence, what cooperation are we talking about here?
3. In the course of the day I think more responses will emerge. Already we heard that we should not be judgmental. The lawsuit is not a proof of guilt. But then, how often did the US file a suit of this nature against anyone related to a sovereign fund of a foreign nation? What further defence have we got other than subjecting ourselves to further ridicule?
4. The worst response we heard so far was that the US could be lying just like the way they lied about Iraq. I have always maintained that whatever we say, regardless of our affiliation, must be based on logic and reason. Malaysia is an ally of the US. For what purpose would the US lie to put the Malaysian government in odium and ridicule? Is our PM like Saddam Hussein? I thought he played golf with Barack Obama.
5. I don’t know how long the DOJ would take to return the loot to Malaysia. But a friend of mine sighed. She said the DOJ would probably return the money in good time so that it can be stolen again! I think this is sad but true and we can choose to ignore it at our own peril.
6. I wonder what PAS would say about money siphoned from 1MDB being used for wild parties with celebrities and paying off gambling debts, since the party is protesting against Selena Gomez’s concert in Malaysia. Look, piousness is not selective.
7. What about our mullah from Terengganu obsessed with his bill, would he say that based on his jurisprudence, no offence was committed since there were no credible male witnesses?
8. There will be urgings for PM Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation. There will also be urgings for all the relevant heads of agencies to resign as well. But I think nothing will happen. If there are intentions to take responsibility, numerous resignations would have taken place much earlier. Soon, they will turn around and point out that Lim Guan Eng has not resigned despite being formally charged. I don’t think we ever know right from wrong any more.
9. I guess depravity is bottomless; shamelessness is boundless, money is power and power is intoxicating.
