There has been some letters condemning the proposed review of the Syariah enactments. What I find to be so strange is the insistence of these writers to impose and intrude into the private space of others.
If they find drinking alcoholic beverages to be an abomination, well so be it. But they cannot stop others who want to drink. I think the problem here is one of domination. Ultimately Lee Ban Chen is correct. Some people just want their beliefs to dominate over others.
That does not bode well for Malaysia's future. This is not an issue of absorbing Western social values. This is about the erosion of legitimate civil and personal liberties at the hands of Islamists who want to dominate the civil and personal space of Malaysian society.
Where in Malaysia is Islam handicapped? Nowhere. A Muslim is free as a bird to practice Islam in Malaysia. Yet, the issue does not stop there. Instead there are now demands that Islam be allowed to intrude into the private space of others.
I fear for the future of Malaysia and ultimately, Asean. What kind of country is this where the common law is different depending on one's personal beliefs? Surely this does not bode well for inter-racial integration.
And worse still, this will simply force those Muslims who want entertainment to go running to Malaysia's non-Muslim neighbours. For goodness sake, it doesn't even cost much to do that.
So I shall look for investment opportunities in Singapore and Thailand that will specifically cater towards the entertainment of Malaysian tourists. Don't worry Malaysians, there are no moral police in Singapore and Thailand.
Strangely enough, there are much less social ills in non-Muslim Singapore than in Malaysia.
