I am shocked that Utusan Malaysia columnist, Astora Jabat is being attacked again by PAS Youth, this time in relation to an article he wrote on an American scholar, Dr Amina Wadud.

I am more shocked that the group Sisters in Islam has not in any way defended Amina. After all, I believe Sisters in Islam has said (in an interview in one of the local papers last year) that they are guided by Amina.

I do not know what Amina's involvement is in Sisters in Islam. But I have read some of her work and find them as intelligent and informative as the next male contemporary scholar.

The male scholars are always never bashed. Are Malaysians bashing Amina because she is with Sisters in Islam? It's like a guilt by association.

I hope friends of Amina will help clarify her real and practical involvement in local issues. I do not think she deserves so much hate speech, especially by those who have not actually read her writings.
