In some respects, I agree with Josh Hong's article on UN Security Council membership. I strongly believe that the country with the least right to be a permanent member of the Security Council is the United Kingdom.
One does not need to scratch one's head to figure out why. True, all nations have their black past to hide, but the UK stands out like a sore thumb. It is on the council because, at the outset, the UN was controlled and dominated by European countries and the US, close allies of the UK.
The UK has not shown any remorse for its humiliation of weaker and lesser developed countries during its years of imperialistic hegemony over them. It is a classic case of 'I am much stronger and I have the weapons, hence, it is my right to rule and humiliate you'.
The UK even formed the Commonwealth to remind itself of its 'empire' and the humiliation and subjugation of weaker countries over the past three centuries. What other purpose does the Commonwealth serve? One must take one's hat off to Burma which has refused to be part of this reminder of the UK's humiliation
Today, the UK talks about freedom, democracy, human rights, etc. and acts as a champion for such causes. Sometimes I wonder how their politicians and leaders can honestly support such values without batting an eyelid.
Till today, some of the lands colonised by Britain still remain under British rule but we don't see the British rushing to surrender these lands back to their rightful owners. In fact, they continue to claim that these occupied lands are rightfully theirs.
