I really empathise with the family of Edmund Terence Gomez . Already the husband is forced to resign form University Malaya to take up a very prestigious post with then UN. Now, his wife is also refused a no-pay leave to accompany him.

Judging by all that has happened, I believe the authorities are not interested in what Gomez can contribute to the UN or Malaysia. The reasons for this are best known only to them.

They are not interested in listening to appeal after appeal from so many quarters that Gomez is a brilliant scholar and a gem in the educational world. Even Pak Lah and the minister of higher education have remained silent on this issue.

As silence means consent, I believe Pak Lah and the minister concur with the decision of the UM vice chancellor to force Gomez to resign.

As such, my conclusion is that they do not appreciate his talent and contribution. Following this, I believe the best course of action for Gomez would be to emigrate to where he is much better appreciated.

He may not have to go far. Our southern neighbour is hungry for such talent like Gomez's. They will readily welcome him.
