Referring to the letter Blatant discrimination a sad reality , I wonder why the writer connected the Edmund Terrence Gomez case with racial discrimination.

It would seem that if a non-Malay is involved, then a university's management is guilty of being racist. But let's be rational.

Look at the issue of the aeronautical engineering course which the Ministry of Higher Education wanted to transfer from Universiti Putra Malaysia to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The UPM vice-chancellor's head was on the block when he objected to the transfer.

Why wasn't that a racial issue?

The way I see it, the whole Gomez saga stems from bad management by UM. This and the fact that some there are just blindly following orders. I also know that there is a political twist to it as Gomez was actively in the university's Academic Staff Association which has been critical of the UM management in the past.

Surely then, any management would be very eager to get rid of those who are vocal in criticising the organisation.
