  • I refer to John Lee's views in Vernacular schools detrimental to unity.

There are many reasons why we remain a disunited country, chief among them the affirmative action policies of the government. I am surprised Lee failed to make any mention of such policies.

Instead he concentrated wholly on the vernacular schools problem, giving two examples of how vernacular students behaved as though they are representative of all the students' behaviour.

If these policies remain, it will not be surprising to see our country still disunited even if national schools are teaching in English or even if there are Pupils' Own Language (POL) classes taught by hardworking and efficient teachers.

Lee says rotten school facilities or inadequate school funding are part of the bigger problem. I hope he will research for his book other factors which make up the bigger problem.
