Police ploy to recruit line-up suspects shameful

Reading Tres' letter What exactly do our police officers want, I must say I am not surprised at what happened to her.

One evening, (this was when I was 17, a few years ago), I was stopped by two policemen on a bike as I was leaving a cybercafe at about 4.30pm. They asked for my IC but then refused to return it and insisted that I can only get it back if I followed them to the police station.

I told them I had to attend an extra class and I wanted my IC back. The officers still refused to return me my IC and said it would only take a while if I followed them to police station. I know something was not right but there was nothing I could do.

They even took away my friend's IC as well. Three or five other teenagers who happened to be parking their bikes also suffered the same fate.

At the police station, we were directed to go to the back of the station (the CID office) for an identity parade. Then I realised the reason we were stopped. We did as ordered and lined up in a row facing the inspector.

Later, we were required to fill out a form. According to the lady clerk, PDRM wanted to thank us for our cooperation. I doubted that as there were columns for 'Name of triad gang', 'Position in triad', 'Tattoos' etc. If this is how our police wants to thank good citizens, then they failed. They scared the hell out of me.

It took two hours before I was allowed to go home. The question is, why was I treated in such a manner? Where are my rights? Is it because that I was 17 and looked young they thought they could deny me my rights?

If that is so, then the adults must accompany their sons wherever they go as there are policemen wandering around looking for teenagers just so they can have enough suspects for their line-up.
