  • Umno Foreign Clubs Alumni Deputy Chairperson Mohamad Rais Zainuddin has asked Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek to demand that private medical students overseas, especially Chinese ones, return home to serve their country.

He said this in response to Chua's recent statement that many government-sponsored medical student overseas refused to return home to serve in the public sector neither did they repay their scholarships.

I think Mohamad Rais has missed the point. Private students are pursuing the medical course at their own expense. Although it would be good if they were to come back to serve their own country, I think this should be on their free will.

This because many of them had been denied the opportunity to pursue a local medical course despite their better results when compared to their bumiputera counterparts (I should say this is a well known fact) due to the quota system.

The refusal of these government-sponsored medical students to come back and serve is a well known fact in the local medical community. It has nothing to do with race. Nevertheless, these people should have the responsibility to honour the contracts they have signed.

If they are staying on overseas yo pursue specialist course and sub-specialist medical courses, then this is a privilege. Their first priority should be to pay back their debt and honour their contract. They should be back to Malaysia once they qualify as a doctor and not find excuses to stay back to earn big bucks.

If they want to do their specialist/sub-specialist courses, they can apply again for scholarships which I think they would have no problem in obtaining.

Mohamad Rais has been insensitive in implying that private Chinese medical students (who do not spend a single sen of taxpayers' money) are the majority of doctors do not want to come back to Malaysia.

The important point is that every one medical student should honour his or her contract. What kind of the doctor would you can't even do this? Mohamad Rais, please don't be racial when raising this issue. The point here is the greed and selfishness of those who use taxpayers' money for their own interest.
