Leaders of the Barisan Nasional component parties have not been talking about the creation of the Bangsa Malaysia following recent elections of their respective party leadership. In the case of Umno, they have even abandoned their lip-service in championing the creation of Bangsa Malaysia by reverting back to their traditional racial parochialism.

The dream of creating a just and caring Bangsa Malaysia as the most important element in nation-building has been sacrificed for the sake of party unity and sustainability. The politicisation of 'economic legacy' issues of each racial group has therefore been perpetuated instead of being solved.

But this is very much in the BN tradition of clamouring for a bigger and better share of national wealth each time they meet. Umno has declared that the NEP is still relevant, the MIC wants a better share of the cake for the Indian community while the MCA has called for the preservation of the Chinese culture and language.

If one could recall, it was hardly two years ago that many of us, including Pak Lah himself, were passionately expounding and extolling the creation of the Bangsa Malaysia. Today it is practically as good as dead.

I had anticipated that politicians would highjack the championing of the Bangsa Malaysia from the true Malaysian nationalists among us who would like to see the emergence of a civil and just Malaysia for all Malaysians.

We are now all back to square one as far as our post-independence nation-building efforts are concerned. The choice now is obvious - racism and political survival or a civil and just Malaysia for all.
