After about two years on the job, I think it is quite fair for us to do an audit on Pak Lah's administration. After all, starting from his civil service days, our prime minister has been in the government all his life.
But instead of showing signs that he could be a very good leader, Pak Lah has shown that he hasn't really has got what it takes to handle the nation's top job.
Pak Lah is said to be a very nice guy. It is said that he wants to make sure that his administration is much more liberal and open, etc, at the same time giving no quarter to corruption.
Up to now, we are far from impressed with the fight against corruption. At a recent meeting of contractors, it is reported that corruption is still happening from top to bottom.
But to be fair to Pak Lah, this disease cannot be cured overnight because his predecessor seemed to believe that corruption can, at times, serve as an engine for growth.
Dr Mahathir Mohamad was said to have given contracts to whoever managed to approach him with certain ideas although the cost could be quite exorbitant if the project was properly evaluated and costed by the Economic Planning Unit.
But Pak Lah has to take personal responsibility for Umno's increasing grip on the Malays. I fear that if this trend continues, the Malays are going to end up like robots. They will only think and act as they are told and it will certainly stifle their progress and suffocate their minds.
This is quite contrary to all the big talk about Malay Glocals, whatever that means.
Since Pak Lah took over, Umno has become some kind of a holding company with a lot of subsidiaries.
Under Umno, we already have Umno Youth and Wanita Umno. Not a lot of people know that these three Umnos have quite a few businesses - many of them are listed on the main board of Bursa Malaysia.
We now have Putera Umno and Puteri Umno which require big recurrent expenditure and big budgets to finance all sorts of projects.
I don't blame government departments like the Social Welfare Department whose functions are often stifled by the 'busybodies' like Umno branches, Umno bureaus, the Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Kampong (JKK) - which is another Umno animal - Putera Umno and Puteri Umno.
If not for these busybodies, tsunami victims at Kuala Muda areas would have been better served by the professionals from various government agencies.
The problem is these political busybodies come and go. Once TV cameras are gone, they are gone too.
Pak Lah also must bear responsibility for the politicisation of the students' representative councils (SRCs) in all public sector universities. Vast sums of money have been spent to ensure victory for pro-government candidates.
Why Pak lah? Why do we have to do all this in this day and age when we want our future graduates to be Melayu Glocals?
My fear is that what we are doing is similar to what they are doing in Pyongyang where university graduates would not mind spending half an hour reciting all the titles of Papa Kim as well the old Papa Kim Sr. Do we want that?
We all know that menteris besar and ministers are also head of youth organisations like the Belia 4B, MAYC, sports bodies, etc.
My only deduction is that Umno will not be happy until they achieved a similar goal like the old East Germany where half of the population is informing on the other half.
Even this does not last long because Allah is still the Main Decider.
