There is no question about it - the recent amendments to the Islamic Family Law bill are unjust to Muslim women. My insight tells me that this family law controversy is just a continuing manifestation of a cowardly, bullying culture, albeit one shrouded in a religious veil.

If our good Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is intent on developing our intellectual capital - turning our people from that of a third world mentality to that of a first world - then we must start here and now.

The strong and the intelligent must stop the bullies and cowards from abusing their positions of power and taking us two steps backward into the third world. He must be courageous enough to step in and reverse the bad decisions made including for instance the Syariah Court's callous interference in a family matter of the late M Moorthy.

Until places like Parliament, the judiciary, and even the syariah courts show themselves to be manned and staffed by people of integrity, intelligence, character and fairness, these places are not yet national institutions.

In fact they become laughing stocks, national institutions demeaned by small people of even lesser capabilities, people who are sneaky, cunning, and narrow-minded. In a developing country such as ours, the leader will have to intervene for the greater good against these small men's decisions.

Pak Lah, we are all looking up to you and your circle of good men. Please don't let us Malaysians - whatever creed or colour - down. The PM's office - high as it may be - is not an easy office to hold and is in fact, a heavy calling.

But you are one of the best amongst us. Stay on the course by being strong. You have more support than you realise. Please do what is fair and right. Hear what all sectors of the society are calling for and not just one.
