I read with interest the letter by Chai Yau Hsiang titled Rights for women an Islamic principle .

I'm not an expert on Islam and therefore would not want to comment on what is or is not in accordance with Islamic beliefs. However, it seems to me that the main issue Chai is concerned with is whether Muslim women should be forced to cover their hair at all times.

Is the option of wearing or not wearing a veil the only issue concerning women's rights? According to the writer, the reason that Muslim women should or should not wear the veil is related to comfort.

However, the writer went on to proscribe other fashion trends. Dressing like Britney Spears is a no-no for Muslim women and wearing jewelry for Muslim men is another no-no. Why is one kind of dress a no-no, while another a yes-yes?

While Chai would grant Muslim women the right to choose whether to wear a veil, he or she would deny Muslim men the right to wear jewelry. Quite honestly, I fail to see the logic in the argument.
