I am confused. The recent petrol hike has hit many. Basically no one was spared. When oil prices go up, everything goes up. But I actually believe that this price adjustment should be made. We need to get rid of the "subsidised mentality" or it will be difficult for us to move on and improve.
However, I always get a little agitated when I read the mainstream papers. Our prime minister and deputy saying that they "understand". Saying that the price of oil we are paying is much lower than the "market price" and when they compare our oil prices with those of our Southeast Asian neighbours. And that we should use our "consumer power" to prevent inflation by boycotting traders or restaurants that charged exorbitantly.
But I am really confused. Why are our cars so expensive? Why are we paying way above the market price for cars? Dear PM and deputy PM, we, the rakyat, understand too. It's called politics.
I still think that our petrol prices should eventually be adjusted to "market rates". Then again, I am also one who thinks our car prices should be adjusted to market rates. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope that this dream will come true, say in 20 years.
Right now I own a diesel-powered car. So when the price of diesel went up from about 80 sen to about RM1.60, don't tell me I'm wasn't affected.
