The prime minister 'confessed' in Parliament that his election promise pertaining to the battle against corruption has been fulfilled. I am so relieved. So now we know. Not that corruption has been thwarted - anyone can tell you that it's still there and flourishing - but that Pak Lah has inadvertently declared his personal benchmark for BN's promises-fulfillment standards.
In the absence of established success-criteria and independent watchdogs, if we are to be guided by Pak Lah's declared standards, Malaysians can expect Pak Lah to promise the moon at the next general elections and it would still be considered fulfilled.
No, we will not be physically on the moon. 'That will take time', he will say four years later. But, just like his promise on corruption, Malaysians are expected to jump with glee at his first step of touching the moon's reflection in the bathtub.
If it had taken two years to convict less than a handful of 'ikan bilis', and a meagre increase of 25 more prosecutions, Pak Lah's definition of a battle is more like a loud but leisurely stroll in the park. I reckon Malaysians will reach the moon in about two centuries from now.
Are we expected to continue being grateful 'dulu, kini dan selama-lamanya'? Or will Pak Lah spare the rakyat his mirages and step down?
