I believe the implementation of the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) is probably the single most important initiative by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi since becoming PM.

It is a concept that is unifying in that it benefits all Malaysians and no one, irrespective of race or religion, can disagree with its merits. People who oppose the IPCMC's implementation obviously benefit from the current system, and will defend it with fervour. I agree with Steve Oh and Kim Quek that the IPCMC should be accepted in good faith and without compromise.

We should not be mistaken that the concept and benefits of the IPCMC are distant from our daily lives or our livelihood. It will have implications in terms of how resources are allocated within the police force and have direct bearing on crime such as snatch thieves, syndicated car thefts and lorry-jackings. When we worry if a child is back late from school or if a family member has had to work the late shift it is because we are uncertain of the security situation or the exposure to negative elements.

In this regard the IPCMC can only add to our peace of mind and not detract from it as we can take comfort from the fact that the police force is acting to keep everyone safe above all other interests. I would only add that the compensation aspects of the police force be looked at to ensure that we pay a market rate for what is an essential service. Let's inject some fervour in favour of the IPCMC, only the incorrigible should fear.
