Singapore opposition’s loyalists
Abdul Latiff Salleh, Tampines, Singapore | May 29, 06 4:23pm

I read with interest of Manjit Bhatia’s comments on the plight of Singapore’s voters in his article Singapore sling.

But less he forgets, Malaysia’s DAP only had but one seat in the previous Sarawak state assembly but the May 20 polls results have indeed changed the Sarawak political landscape.

We, too, experienced a 34 percent shift in the popular vote to the opposition in our recent general elections and remarkably opposition MPs Chiam See Thong and Thia Khiang won with improved margins this time round.

Even though a S$180 million carrot was dangled before their two constituencies of Potong Pasir and Hougang, it’s now proven that Singaporeans would not bite the bait but would rather bite the bullet and remain faithful to their incumbent MPs.

Of course, it is the duty of the government of the day to always paint a rosy picture, whatever the election results are. That’s what politics is all about. I bet if Blind Freddy were to have bet his last dollar on PAP winning back Potong Pasir and Hougang on May 6, he would have ended up teaching braille in Hougang with Low’s blessings!

Yes, we are lonely sometimes. Yes, we do fight, like all families do. But there is always time to heal the wounds and move on. Lastly, being Singaporeans, we close ranks and keep on building our tiny red dot. Not forgetting to race tadpoles in the heartlands on Sundays.
