The contest for the MIC deputy president's post between the incumbent S Subramaniam and challenger G Palanivel reminds me of the Hollywood flick 'Alien vs Predator'. Why? Because of the movie's tag-line 'Whoever wins, we lose' aptly describes the situation.
The 'we' here is the Indian Malaysian community, which is still in the doldrums despite the fiery rhetoric from its leaders who drive big cars and dwell in big houses.
The contest is of utmost importance but not to the community. It is important for Samy Vellu, Palanivel and Subramaniam (not to mention their respective cronies) since it is their interests that are at stake.
MIC is an irrelevant party, the younger generation of Indians are no longer interested. The party can only convince the less informed segment of the community or those who seek personal advancement to join its fold.
So now the party is having its elections, a great event say the faithful pundits. Nonsense, say I. Let's give it a skip and concentrate on more important events, like the World Cup, which is definitely played on a more level field.
The MIC campaign is laden with personal attacks but none of the candidates have even mentioned anything about their plans or visions for the community. There is a president, to whom the words 'retirement' and 'diplomacy' hold no meaning. There is a deputy, who is known for all the wrong reasons.
And now, suddenly, thrust into the already lacklustre limelight is the anointed successor who has appointed the president as his campaign manager while he just quietly hangs on to his coattails.
So come June 24, MIC delegates will cast their ballots. My advice, go ahead vote for Subramaniam or Palanivel, it makes no difference. On the other hand, they could vote for Ronaldhinho.
At least with him, the community can be assured of seeing some goals scored at the other end instead of dealing with those who are only keen on scoring own goals.
As for Samy Vellu, Subramaniam, Palanivel and for all other political oldies, why can't you just let it go? Is this really that important? In case you haven't heard, there are other things more important than power.
Remember, respect is earned, it cannot be purchased or demanded. When it is not earned, then live in fear of your own shadow for there will never be true friends or allies.
MIC...key Mouse, coming June 24, another 'Walt Disney' production.
