As the hours and days quicken to the MIC AGM and this weekend's polls for the party leadership positions, Malaysians are witnessing political events that have a mixture of drama and irony.
It is interesting to note that the incumbent deputy president has been the incumbent for more than a quarter of a century. A quarter century is indeed a long time. They say a week is a century in politics. Indeed, time is a commodity of which he has not been short of in this last quarter century.
The question that many Indian Malaysian would like to ask him at this point is: what has he really done for the Indian community?
There is not a single programme or political project that one can identify S Subramaniam with. If we ask the average Indian about this, almost all the time we will draw a blank.
Subramaniam has held numerous positions in the MIC and in the government in various ministries over the past quarter century. At that senior level, he could have pushed for or developed programmes utilising party, community and government resources to further the welfare of the Indian community.
It is pointless for someone aspiring for a high political position to just a mere decoration.
