The MIC is the third most senior component element in the Barisan Nasional. Critics have argued that the MIC is relatively important in the decision-making hierarchy of the Barisan Nasional, though this is hotly disputed by some MIC supporters.

The Malaysian public are witnessing another political contest for party positions which will be decided this weekend at the MIC AGM. Among the contests, the one that is attracting the most public attention is the one between S Subramaniam, the incumbent deputy president and his challenger, G Palanivel. The outcome of this contest will set the stage for the laying out of the political succession plan in the MIC.

Palanivel brings a new perspective and the promise of a new approach and effective teaming-up S Samy Vellu - the president - to implement the programmes of the MIC. These programmes centre on galvanising the Indian community.

Political critics have dismissed this as part and parcel of lobbying for the deputy president's position. However, it must be said in fairness that Palanivel brings fresh air into the MIC electioneering process.

The MIC has been heavily criticised by the opposition but it must be admitted that it has contributed to the development of the Indian community in various spheres. A key element in the functioning of any political party is ironically, trust. It is this element of trust that makes a political party a cooperative organisation, working towards common goals and objectives.

When this element of political trust is eroded in a political party, at the level of leadership, the party is not able to function effectively. It is obvious, given the statements of the MIC president, that this trust does not exist today, nor has it existed for some time between the president and his current deputy.

Given this state of affairs, the delegates at the forthcoming MIC AGM will have to make a choice between an effective, functioning political leadership or one riddled with suspicion and distrust. Further, delegates would have to make a choice based on the long-term interests of the MIC and the community.
