It is still very hard for me to accept that we, Malaysians, are such a gullible lot. Until today, no one has informed the public of benefits of the so-called crooked bridge. First of all, it would have a great positive environmental impact by allowing a free-flow of the sea from both sides of the Causeway. The stench and pollution would be reduced and the sea would be obviously cleaner.

Furthermore - and this is why Singapore opposed the project - it would help Malaysian ports (at the expense of Singapore's) by enabling direct connection between Tanjung Pelepas and Pasir Gudang. Ships would need not go around Singapore, but could rather use a short cut. Along the way, Malaysia would enjoy numerous economic benefits from various port and marine services.

As a matter of fact, Tanjung Pelepas would then be a genuine Singapore competitor, bringing in extra billions of revenue for Malaysia. People should stop being selfish and narrow-minded and raise a ruckus about the individuals involved in construction of the bridge. After all, I am sure that if Pak Lah wanted to get somebody else to do it, there would be no opposition from Mahathir.

However, gullible Malaysians fell for a stupid reasoning and that is apparently we do not want to sell sand and lend our airspace to Singapore! Why should we even be bothered about giving them airspace and sand? We are constructing on what is officially part of Malaysia and what has Singapore got to do with it?

I was with a Singaporean friend of mine recently and he was saying that Singaporeans are laughing at us for not proceeding with the bridge. They (Singaporeans) are very clear on the benefits it would bring to Malaysia, but we, Malaysians, are not. Sad.

For the sake of our independence and dignity, I pray that Dr M wins the battle with Pak Lah and the other ministers, such as Nazri Aziz and Syed Hamid Albar.
