I refer to your report Gov't declassifies documents on bridge issue .

It is commendable that the government has decided to declassify documents relating to the contrived controversy over the crooked bridge. This is a good first step towards greater transparency in government.

Since the government has deemed it expedient to remove the veil of 'official secret' on these documents in response to the rambling of a retired politician, one would hope that the government would be even more responsive to the legitimate demands of civil society for more access to information, especially with regards to matters affecting the public good.

Could we now have access, for example, to the terms of the contracts made with the operators of the North-South Highway and the independent power producers (IPPs)? And could we have the actual revenue of Petronas since its formation and how its revenue has been spent? While we're at it, disclose to the cabinet decisions on the purchase and sale of MAS shares.

More importantly, it is hoped that the government will see the benefits of enacting a Freedom of Information Act in the very near future.
