When AirAsia just started their operations, their fares were really a lot cheaper than MAS. You could buy a one-way ticket from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur from RM19.99 to RM99.99. Those were the days when AirAsia really lived up to their slogan, 'Now everyone can fly'.
Nowadays, the fares offered by AirAsia are so much higher. In some cases, it is about the same as MAS. For example, for Flight AK5103 on May 15, the fare from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur was RM459.99 compared to MAS' fare of RM483.00. A return trip was RM919.98. Not many people can afford it.
I think it is time to define what is low-cost carrier. How many percent of their tickets are really low-priced?
For me, AirAsia can no longer call itself a low-cost airline and their slogan needs to be changed to 'Not Everyone Can Fly!'.
