I'm replying to FN's Chinese M'sians must accept their lot . I agree that Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's recent comment was uncalled for.

While Lee is right in many ways, I thought making noises about it could cause disharmony, especially among Malaysians of different races. I write to note how unhappy I am about FN's letter, especially it being written by a fellow Malaysian.

As a bumiputera native of East Malaysia, I can assure you that not only the Chinese and Indians are marginalised as natives are also marginalised. The non-bumiputera population of Malaysia have significantly contributed to our economy and development. They are hardworking people and whatever they earn is from their own hard work.

The New Economic Policy was introduced to close the socio-economic gap between the different ethnic groups in Malaysia and not to help Malays "take back" what is theirs. The bumis now are much better off but we must respect our friends for being tolerant over the last few decades.

Secondly, the non-bumiputeras are just as much Malaysian as the bumiputeras. Most of the Malaysians today are either second or third-generation of immigrants who came to this country, and most are born in Malaysia. Obviously, the new generation feels marginalised as bumis now are much more well-off.

However, some of us bumis are also asking for too much special rights so that we can continue to live in comfort.
