I was interested in the letter Islam has evolved to meets the needs of Umno by Proarte. However, I must protest the efforts of the writer to demonise Islamic teachings.

The verse in point (5:51) is actually wrongly translated. Not only must it not be read in isolation, but it must be read together with the other verses within the same chapter. Meaning, the chapter should be read in full as quoting lone sentences will make it appear out of context.

The correct translation for 5:51 is: 'Oh you who believe, do not take certain Jews and Christians as 'allies''.

'Friends'is an inappropriate word as it usually refers to relationships of a social sort without any political or military connotations. Automatically, the next question in the mind of a person reading the above will be: 'So which of the Jews and Christians can Muslims befriend?'

The Quran continues to clarify. Verse 5:57 says: 'Oh you who believe, do not befriend from among the recipients of previous scriptures (Christians received the Bible and Jews received the Torah) who mock and ridicule your religion'.

This would be relevant in light of the Danish cartoons insulting Muhammad recently. Then one may ask: 'So, whom of the Jews and Christians can Muslims befriend?'

Verse 60.8 says: 'God does not prohibit you from befriending those who do not fight you because of your religion, and who do not evict you from your homes. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them (the Jews and the Christians)'.

Verse 60:9 says: 'God prohibits you from befriending ... those who band together with others to banish you from your land'.

I hope my explanation will clear up any misconception about Islam.
