'Keperdulian Rakyat' (concern for the people), that was what I heard from Anwar Ibrahim during the last Keadilan assembly. I think that social justice and reformation must begin with caring for the rakyat, and Anwar has hit the nail on the head.
Whether those were words from a seasoned politician or whether they were his heartfelt belief, he has got the right when he said the people 'won't care how much you know until they know how much you care'.
Towards this, Dr Azly Rahman's article on helping the Indian community is so refreshing coming from a Malay scholar. Instead of talking about economic jihad, or whether Dr Mahathir Mohamad did enough for the Indian community or rousing the masses by claiming the continuity of NEP or continuing the struggle (whatever that means), Azly talked about extending the Malay affirmative action policies to the Indian community.
He talked about the 'haves' sharing with the 'have nots'. Now that is a radical idea and why not? A hungry man is a hungry man whether he is Indian, Malay or Chinese.
Let Mahathir, Pak Lah, Najib and all other political leeches battle it out while the masses struggle with making ends meet. Let justice be known by this very two words 'Keperdulian Rakyat'. And come 2008, we will have a different political landscape, Insya Allah.
