I refer to the letters Cyprus owes existence to Turkey and Secularism not always a guarantee .

Contrary to what the writers suggest, Cyprus is a case of religious (Christian) fundamentalism. The policy of the Greek Orthodox church in Cyprus has always been to turn Cyprus into a Greek island. This is a racist and nationalist policy, which involves expelling or killing Moslem Turkish Cypriots, leaving the remainder as a subservient minority. It is a clear case of ethnic cleansing, for which the Greek Cypriot leaders should be brought to justice.

It is no accident that the Greek Cypriot leader at the time of independence in 1960 was an Archbishop, and it took him only three years to put his plan into action. On Jan 14, 1964 Il Giorno of Italy reported:

'Right now we are witnessing the exodus of Turkish Cypriots from the villages. Thousands of people abandoning homes, land, herds. Greek Cypriot terrorism is relentless. This time the rhetoric of the Hellenes and the statues of Plato do not cover up their barbaric and ferocious behaviour'.

Former British prime minister, Sir Alec Douglas Home, said in his memoirs: 'If the Greek Cypriot leadership could not treat the Turkish Cypriots as human beings they were inviting the invasion and partition of the island'.

The Greek Cypriots failed in 1964 because the Turkish Cypriots withdrew into defended enclaves, where they survived until Turkey rescued them in 1974. The Greek Cypriots attacked again in 1967, and the leader of the 1974 coup, Nicos Sampson, told the Greek press. '... if Turkey had not intervened I would have annihilated the Turkish Cypriots'. I am sure that if the Turkish soldiers had withdrawn after 1974, the Greek Cypriots would have attacked again.

The Annan Plan was endorsed by the EU (including Greece), the US, the UN, and everyone else except the Greek Cypriots as a fair basis for settlement even though tens of thousands of Turkish Cypriots would have been evicted from their homes in the areas given back to the Greek Cypriots. The Greek Cypriots were persuaded by their religious leaders to reject it because it would have ended forever their ambition to take over the whole island.

The world, including Malaysia, should wake up to what the real Greek Cypriot objective is and refuse to continue the isolation of the Moslem Turkish Cypriots a moment longer.
