  • I refer to the letter Has everyone forgotten these dates? by Mohd Zaki. I do think his figures on the price of fuel are hugely misleading. They are completely wrong since he has made a huge mistake in his assumption.

Crude oil is not the fuel you use for your car. Anyway, I'll attempt to rework his figures based on previous calculations from this source.

Depending on the configuration and complexity of the refinery, petroleum yields from a barrel of crude oil range from 50 percent to 65 percent. Other products are kerosene (jet fuel), home heating oil, propane and butane, certain chemical feed stocks, and petroleum coke. So let's take the average of that i.e. 57.5%.

So, one barrel of oil = 158.984 litres.

57.5% of oil to be converted to petroleum = 91.4158 litres

    Cost of one barrel = US$58.32 = RM209.95 (using a rough conversion of US$1 = RM3.60)

Therefore, the cost of one litre of petroleum = RM209.95 / 91.4158 litres = RM2.30/litre.

The cost of petroleum in our petrol kiosks in Malaysia = RM 1.92/litre

Do note that in this calculation, I've excluded costs for refining the oil, transporting and distributing it, advertising, salary of workers, franchising costs, R&Ds, etc.
