Palm oil - deforestation issue a ploy by developed world

I refer to the malaysiakini report A palm oil charm offensive in Europe.

I find it staggering that Malaysian officials deem it necessary to go on a charm offensive in Europe. The figures that are quoted are evidence enough that Malaysia is unfairly attacked on this issue of deforestation and palm oil.

How can 98 percent of our virgin jungles be destroyed within the next 15 years? When I fly MAS or AirAsia and the sky is cloudless, I can see rainforests stretching as far as the eye can see. Even if we were to import all the bulldozers in the world it would still be logistically and humanly impossible to remove 98 percent of our virgin jungles within the next 15 years - unless, like the Indonesians, we resort to slash burning which we all know, is not practised here.

No, I smell a rat somewhere. Palm oil has come in for such concerted and virulent attacks because it is the most productive oil crop in the world. One hectare can yield 6,000 litres of oil whereas soy and corn will struggle to yield even 10 percent of that. Malaysia has to be attacked because we happen to be the world's largest producer of palm oil, not because of our forest conservation record.

This 'deforestation' issue is just a ploy by the developed world to stop palm oil's progress in its tracks and in the process slow down the advance of the developing economies. This gambit is as old as colonialism.

If we want to talk of deforestation, the West are the world champions, bar none. Please note that all these environmental NGO's hail from the West. Have you considered the possibility that these NGO's are just doing the bidding of their national masters? That's how they fill their coffers. The sad thing is that the global media buys this - and we know who controls the global media. The West again.

Let me say finally, that I'm not anti-West. Only that the tonality and virulence of the attacks will act as a wake-up call for anyone who can read between the lines.
