I refer to the malaysiakini report No faith in Anwar, Ezam quits PKR . The former youth leader's exit from Parti Keadilan Rakyat has long been a foregone conclusion. It only goes to show that history always has a way of repeating itself some way or the other. Umno politicians will always come back into the party's fold no matter what the situation was or how they have been humiliated.

All this is done in the name of politics where 'anything can happen' as the saying goes. This 'anything' will also mean that one has to be a person without any principles or values. In short, one would have to just sway in the direction of the wind that blows.

It will be difficult for the non-Malays to have trust in Malay leaders who storm out of Umno shouting and ranting about reforms and good governance but only to return to its fold when the coast is clear years later. This trend is very evident no matter how one looks at it. The bottom line is that a Malay leader is always a leader with Umno in his heart unless he a leader from PAS who may have some convictions.

Once a leader is out in the cold after years of being in the comfort zone where the contracts were good and almost everything could have been done by just making a phone call, frustration tends to set in. When this is the scenario, many would consider returning to the fold even if it would make them an outcast in the party they had deserted when the going got tough.

For them, being an outcast with some contacts is better than being a reformist with all the doors shut. Therefore, the bottom line is that once one is at a certain level, one would not want to jeopardise that position with the hard knocks of opposition politics where one would have to face the police and frequent lock-ups.

Malaysia being a country with a one-party government where everything is centred in and around Umno, it would be better for the founders of PKR to just disband and go back to Umno. As for the Malays, there is no better political platform that they can choose to build their political careers on than that of Umno's, which is the government of the day.

The colonial masters had very cleverly set in place a divide-and-rule policy which is seen as the best for a country like Malaysia because multi-racial politics just doesn't seem to convince the people. Perhaps the change towards better governance where a fairer and more equal platform is created for the betterment of all Malaysians irrespective of race can only emanate from Umno and no where else, and this is just a reality which we have to accept.
