Allow me to voice my plight regarding abovementioned subject. I earned my living through employment (wage earner) as a junior executive of sorts in the early 60s. EPF contributions then were rather low.

When I withdrew my EPF upon retirement at 55, my balance was 159,000. Today, after 10 years of no income retirement, I am now left with only a few thousand ringgit in my bank account.

Things are getting more and more expensive, especially medicines. As we grow older, our health worsens and so we need food supplements and other medications for cholesterol and high blood pressure, etc.

Now my wife and I depend on our son who earns about RM2,000 a month. With this amount, he has to pay for his house and car mortgages and his two children's tuition. At the end of the day, he has nothing left. Not even for a can of beer.

I believe there are many more out there who are in a similar situation like us. Maybe worse situations.

So I urge the government to look into the plight of these senior citizens. By setting up a 'Senior Citizens Relief Fund Scheme' to allow those of us aged 60 and above to receive, say, a RM500 subsidy per month.

Many of us can still work, but who wants to employ us? Is life still worth living?
