I find the current commotion by politicians and the 'rakyat' regarding Namewee's rendition of the Negaraku to be a waste of national energy. It is a storm in a tea cup. Indeed, we have much more serious issues threatening our nation than a Mandarin rap song criticising our country.

We could have used this great national energy to tackle the problems raised in his song. The problems that I could identify through his song are:

  • Corruption in the police force

  • Inefficient government service
  • The brain drain
  • A seeming lack of racial and religious sensitivity of our youths
  • Bumiputera dependence on the NEP
  • All the issues raised in his song are serious and have been raised by politicians from both sides. I distinctly remember Dr Mahathir Mohamad crying over the last point a few years ago.

Instead of wasting taxpayers money on sueing Namewee, I think the government could put our money to greater use by solving all the five issues above. In Malaysia, our politicians seem to have taken a liking for killing the messenger as it has a pleasant effect of sweeping the bigger issues under the carpet.

For those among the rakyat who were greatly affected by the racial and religious insensitivity of the song, my sympathies go to you. When I see Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin spewing all kinds of racial filth for political mileage, the bad behavior of Umno Youth, the Muslim extremists in our country giving out religious edicts that hurts the followers of other religions, I thought the pain caused by a powerless Chinese Malaysian youth through a rap song would be somewhat more of an itch.

I believe when our politicians and 'orang-orang besar' escape scot-free for their insensitive statements on racial and religious issues but the full brunt of the law is brought to bear on Namewee, we have all committed a great crime to our nation.

Instead of wasting money, time, and effort on sueing a powerless boy, let us forge a better future for Malaysia by improving our country with regards to the points raised by Namewee's song.
