I refer to the letter Wee's song reflects views of non-Malay youth . I am sad that so many people have opinions that have no resemblance to fact.

First of all, corruption is a two-way thing - the giver and the taker. To condemn only the taker is mischievous. Wee Meng Chee's song gives the impression that the police are going around stopping innocent Malaysians then demanding bribes. The fact is that those people being stopped have committed traffic offences and instead of paying their summons in full, they prefer to offer a bribe to the policeman. Since our men in blue earn a pittance, they do on occasions succumb to temptation.

Secondly, the song criticises what the singer perceives as discrimination against the Chinese minority in regards to educational opportunities. Obviously the writer is blind to the facts on the ground. Every year, tens of thousands of applications for places in local universities are rejected. For many of these hopeful students, it is the end of the road.

These students are not predominantly Chinese but are made up of all ethnic races including Malays and Indians. They cannot afford an education because their parents are too poor to pay the exorbitant fees of our private colleges and due to the exchange rate, can only dream of going overseas.

These students, who are seeing their aspirations going up in smoke because of lack of funds, have no choice but to terminate their studies and seek employment. If I may quote a Malay proverb, it is a case of 'Sudah jatuh, ditimpa tangga' (one misfortune after another).

These young men and women now have to scrape a living because in Malaysia, minimum wage does not exist. Thousands of lives have been condemned because of two failed government policies, one, the privatisation of education in Malaysia and two, the supply of cheap labour to maximise directors' profits.

I hope next time Wee will make a music video which highlights the true situation and the government's apathy towards its people. Maybe he can include in his video-clip scenes of homeless Malaysians sleeping on the sidewalks and the municipal council workers asking them to get lost as they are eyesores not unlike pieces of garbage.

He should show single mothers who prostitute themselves because our government cares not for their welfare. He should show images of elderly women in villages living alone in houses with leaky roofs and broken toilets and the only assistance they get from the government is less than RM100 a month.
