I refer to the malaysiakini report Speaker disallows debate on RM4.6 bil scandal . The government of the day must be held responsible for this huge wastage of taxpayers' money which the politicians' are using up at their whims and fancies and becoming 'untouchables' forgetting that they are accountable to the 'rakyat'.
The latest being the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) which started off at RM400 million before ballooning to RM4.6 billion and the reason stated are variation orders (VO), consultant fees, interest, land bought at premium price and etc.
Before any project is carried out, all the nitty-gritty things have to be planned and budgeted for. Yes, there would be some VOs to the original plans but not at a huge cost unless these VOs are done to siphon money.
Surprisingly, the lawyer's firm for the S&P (sale and purchase agreement) is the same for both the buyer and seller, which is unheard off. The company involved is politically co-related with the Umno's Kapar Division.
We have been telling the government since the Mulpha incident and the cooperatives scandal of the late 80s that politics and business should be separated and should be run by professionals and not politicians. The latter may have several hidden agendas and be a liability for the company.
It is also very insulting and annoying that the transport minister has not shown any responsibility to inform the 'rakyat' about the root cause of the PKFZ debacle, its status as of now and remedial action. Running way from press conference and keeping a deafening silence will make the issue disappear or vanish into thin air. The explanation given to the journalists by the director of the project's turnkey contractor - who is a political appointee - is sickening bordering on arrogance.
It will be timely if a Parliamentary Select Committee be set up and to investigate thoroughly this biggest fiasco of the century. The money being used for the bailout could have been properly utilised to assist in the rural poor to come out from their poverty or such project for the deserving 'rakyat'.
The government now has to show where they are going to get the money to provide PKFZ with the soft loans and PKFZ has to draw up a comprehensive plan showing how it intend to pay off all its outstanding debts.
It is high time that the culprits involved in this episode be fired from their positions to set a precedent showing that the government means business and wants transparency. Please don't just transfer them around like a game of like musical chairs as the rot will start again somewhere else causing more damage to the government.
