In the US, we have the Republicans versus the Democrats.
In the UK, we have the Conservatives versus the Labour party.
In Malaysia, what do we have? BN versus some blah blah opposition.
What does this picture tell you?
For a country to be successful, there needs to be at least a strong and equal opposition party to check the government (of course, with a few exceptions like Singapore, but that is a different story). Greedy kids in a candy shop without any supervision will turn the shop upside-down, what more for greedy politicians!
There are too many small opposition parties in Malaysia. The opposition should unite to form a single, bigger party. Since most of the oppositions are now "fighting" for true justice and a Malaysia for Malaysians anyway, what are you waiting for? Get yourselves together and start talking. Come up with a manifesto. We might not see that "other party" at the coming election but we do hope to see it in the next one after that.
It is easier said than done. Maybe I am being a tad nave but I do hope there won't be any racial segregation within the opposition party like our wonderful BN! Politics and race should never mix as it is the formula to create anxiety amongst the races. I am sure Malaysians today do not need race-based intimidations and must realise that the world does not end along our shores.
Malays will still be the majority, Chinese and Indians will still be the minorities (what with the Chinese birth rate dwindling anyway). There is no enemy. Everyone is equal as human beings. Everyone deserves a better life. Everyone works hard for a living. There are no rights to be defended (by a keris or whatsoever). The only rights may be the right to corrupt!
The NEP should be revamped to provide for the poor regardless of background. Are we still set for Vision 2020 or Mission 2057? Fifty years seem a bit too far for me to envision but I hope China and India have a longer vision or mission than ours or else we might find it a bit difficult to catch up in this part of the globe.
