The Bersih march on Nov 10 resulted in an adrenaline rush for many who were participating and maybe even more for those who were not there. Over the past few days, speculations abound as to how the Agong would respond after His Highness had read the Bersih memorandum handed over to his aide.
Some believed that the Election Commission would be turned over and become truly independent, thus being able to ensure that the coming 12th General Election would be a free and fair one with all contesting parties having a level-playing field. But all these high hopes and expectations appear to have come to nought when Bernama reported that 'Tuanku Mizan regrets claims that he supports illegal rally' and Malaysiakini reported King: No royal support for Bersih rally .
It is very gracious of the Agong to take such a short time to respond to the Bersih memorandum and to respond in a manner His Highness has never done before. His Highness, through the Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja of Istana Negara, Wan Mohd Safiain Wan Hasan, for the first time, summoned the media to publicise the content of the Agong's statement on Bersih. Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja stressed that the Agong viewed the matter seriously and summoned the media to ensure the message reaches the people.
His Highness also reminded that 'Every Malaysian citizen is responsible for maintaining public order for continued peace and stability in the country.' His Highness also hoped that the people would work together to preserve unity and harmony ensuring that the country would continue to develop, prosper and be respected.
The positive side to the Agong's response is that His Highness has pointed the way forward for the rakyat. The rakyat , like all good citizens must act responsibly and peacefully, and continue to develop and prosper the nation. There is nothing like the rakyat applying some of their very own elbow grease to get what the they want.
Thank you, Duli Yang Maha Mulia. Daulat Tuanku.
