Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek impressed me as a gentleman at first when he admitted that the man in the sex DVD was him. But that impression faded at once when he said that he still wanted to hang on as health minister.

It was, however, restored when he today said that he would resign from all his government and party posts.

He understood that his extramarital sex with another woman is no small matter in this conservative nation of ours. In Islam or Christianity, this amounts to adultery and is very much scorned by society.

In 1989, the British War Minister Jack Profumo was caught having affair with Christine Keeler. The British public, though much more open, could not accept such a scandal. In the end, Profumo had to resign on his own accord.

Taking the cue from this example, Dr Chua Soi Lek’s resignation was only to be expected.
