I refer to Malaysiakini report Damansara school 'reopened' .
The above headline made my heart leap with joy for a moment. I thought that with the reopening of the school, students living nearby would be saved the trouble of travelling to the nearest Chinese school which is a few kilometres away. Not only that, parents of average-income would feel a substantial relief financially.
More importantly, I thought that with the opening of the school, Pak Lah is finally making good of his ideal of being PM for all Malaysians.
But upon reading the full report, it was not to be. The school is still closed to students. It makes me wonder why the authority is so bent on denying convenience to the community living near the school. Already it is well-known that nearby Chinese schools are filled to the brim and absurdly crowded. Opening yet another school is not too excessive a request.
The community in that area sincerely and sorely needs another school and yet the authority finds it fit to deny them. I do not know what pleasure they derive from its action.
Investing in education is never a waste of funds. It is time that the authority does away with the perception that relenting to request of a community is a sign of weakness.
The opposite is true. If they were to accede to the Damansara's community request, they would be very much appreciated. It shows that the authority is magnanimous and appreciates hardships faced by parents.
The parents in Damansara have begged, politicians have pleaded and negotiated and I believe Pak Lah and Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein Onn have heard them loud and clear. A simple solution on their part in opening the school would go a long way for the people.
