I almost puked when I read this letter by Anonymous ([#1] Indians must make radical changes [/#], March 29). It sounds as if the writer was embarrassed and even regretted being Indian and a Tamilian at that!
When you only hear me speak you might easily mistake me for someone with an Anglo Saxon accent, when I make myself sound like one! My regret is that I don't speak Tamil as well but I do carry a conversation and can very easily convey the gist of Anonymous' letter to any Tamil-speaking audience.
Every opportunity I get to speak in Tamil even in the presence of my Caucasion or Chinese or Malay friends, I do so proudly. When we eat out at an Indian restaurant I use my fingers as food does indeed taste better eaten like that!
As for Tamil movies, there may be some truth in what Anonymous says. But being the simple-minded people that they mostly are the fans of Indian movies view them for the little mystic and fantasy that they introduce their lives to. Sorry if they cannot afford the karaokes and the five-star hotel lounges.
The many Tamil- and Hindi-based pubs and discotheques unfortunately are also beyond the means of many. But I can proudly declare to Anonymous that my two white friends I took to Minnal surely enjoyed the sounds and the dancing to Tamil music! (By the way Minnal is a discotheque in the Federal Hotel in KL, just in case Anonymous thinks it must be in Sentul or something.)
And by the way Anonymous, it appeared as if you were embarrassed by the name your parents gave you; if that is the case, you can have mine, anytime!
